Mushoku Tensei: Why Rudeus' Redemption Arc Doesn't Work

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is apparently one of the more influential works in the isekai genre. It deconstructed many of the tropes that later became popular in the genre, while popularizing a few of its own(e.g. being reincarnated in another world after being hit by a truck). However, Rudeus' "redemption arc," in which he makes amends for the sins of his previous life, is one of the more poorly executed examples of that trope. What Makes A Good Redemption Arc I discussed this in my entry about Zuko's redemption arc , but I should go into the three basic elements that constitute a good redemption arc. Quite simply, like most character arcs, or any process of change, it involves three things- a starting point, a journey and a destination. The starting point should ideally involve the character seeking redemption as a flawed but redeemable individual. In Zuko's case, while he became obsessed with capturing the Avatar to regain his honor, he did so under

Hexos: The Worst Brawler's Guild Foe in World of Warcraft

The Brawler's Guild in World of Warcraft has a wide variety of foes, from easy to difficult, from straightforward to complex, but few are as unnecessarily frustrating as Hexos is. An Introduction to The Brawler's Guild The Brawler's Guild is an arena where players can fight alone against various opponents. If the player wins, they will return to the waiting area and will move on to the next opponent on their next fight, but if they lose, they will die and have to run back from the graveyard. Those fights have a two-minute time limit, and if the time expires, flames will race across the arena, killing the player instantly. The fights can be simple tests of gear/DPS, complex encounters, or relatively gimmicky fights, and Hexos falls into the latter category. Hexos Explained. Hexos's mechanics are primarily based off the game Super Hexagon, and it would be best to start by explaining that game. The player controls a triangle, and by pressing left or right, revolves around

Ace Attorney Case Files: Rise From The Ashes(Part 3/3)

Now for the third and final part of the Case File for Rise From The Ashes. As you might expect, this features the rest of the case- the final investigation sequence, the final trial and the denouement. Previously On... Phoenix Wright is hired to defend Lana Skye, who has been accused of murdering Bruce Goodman. Lana apparently was seen killing Goodman in the parking lot of the prosecutors' office, but Goodman was seen being murdered at the same time in the police evidence room. Phoenix eventually proved that the murder in the evidence room was a fake, and that Officer Jake Marshall had impersonated the victim to steal the evidence from SL-9, a closed case that was about to be put away for good. Jake's brother died in the SL-9 incident, and Jake was determined to find the truth. It turned out that Lana was involved in that case, as both she and her sister were witnesses and Lana was the prosecutor. Jake demanded to know whether Lana had forged evidence, and she said yes, result

Ace Attorney Case Files: Rise From The Ashes(Part 2/3)

Welcome back to my Case File for Rise From The Ashes. This entry will pick up where we left off last time, and get to the second investigation and trial days. Previously On... Two months after Maya's departure, a girl named Ema Skye hired Phoenix Wright to defend her sister Lana, a public prosecutor accused of killing a detective named Bruce Goodman in a parking lot. Phoenix accepted, despite the fact that Lana's guilt seemed certain. Phoenix learned that Edgeworth, who was prosecuting the case, was the subject of many unpleasant rumors, and that Edgeworth's subordinate Detective Gumshoe had been ostracized. During the trial, Phoenix cross examined Angel Starr, an ex-detective with a hatred of prosecutors, and managed to cast doubt on her claim that she saw Lana commit the murder, while finding a clue to a past incident known as SL-9. Police Chief Damon Gant took the stand, and revealed that Goodman had apparently been killed in the evidence room of the police station, and

Ace Attorney Case Files: Rise From The Ashes(Part 1/3)

The gap between my previous update and the one before it was longer than usual, so to make up for it, I'll post this next one a bit early.   Introduction Rise From The Ashes is unusual in many ways. It's the only case in the franchise that doesn't have "Turnabout" in its name. It was added to the original game's rerelease on the DS, between Trials & Tribulations and Apollo Justice. It also features minigames that would later be seen in Apollo Justice. To a lesser extent, it's one of the longest cases in the franchise. Because of the latter, this Case File will be split into three parts, one for each day. Investigation Day 1 The case begins with Phoenix in his office, some time after Maya's return to Kurain Village. Apparently, he's had offers for cases, but hasn't taken any, which is a poor idea considering how little business he usually gets. He receives a visit from a girl named Ema Skye, who's asking for Mia Fey, and mistakes him for

How To Make Persona 3's Social Links Easier

Persona 3 was when the Persona series first debuted its series of Social Links. By spending time with your friends and choosing the right answers, you could deepen your bonds and make your fused Personas of their respective Arcanas more powerful. While it was a welcome addition to the series, there were some flaws. Not only were some of the Social Links not as well-written as those in later games, but you practically can't afford to make any mistakes if you want to do all Social Links in one playthrough. The reasons for the latter include: Mitsuru's Social Link becomes available in late November, and Aigis' Social Link becomes available in early January, while the game ends on January 30. In the original game, Social Links would eventually Reverse if you neglect them for too long(requiring you to spend a session fixing them), then Break if they are neglected for too long after that(permanently becoming unusable). The above is exacerbated by the "jealousy" mechani
