In Defense of Longevity

I've seen some lists of short RPGs that are best for busy adults, in which many of those adults comment that they no longer have the time for 100-hour RPGs. Their feelings are understandable, since long RPGs can be large time investments, but I have to wonder if they're thinking about them the right way. Let's start by looking at video games as challenges that are meant to be completed, with the goal being to experience as many as possible within one's limited leisure time. From that point of view, if someone could only play two hours a day, a 100-hour RPG would take that person over seven weeks to complete, while a 20-hour RPG would be much more manageable, and could be finished in ten days. But what if we thought of it differently? As fun as completing a game is, it's also the end of your enjoyment of that game, unless you find it engaging enough to play again. As such, the 100-hour RPG would last the aforementioned person seven weeks, while they would get throug

A Tale of Two Shizurus

If you're familiar with the Mai-Hime and/or Mai-Otome series, you may know of a character named Shizuru, whose surname is Fujino in Hime and Viola in Otome. The two characters share a name, and certain personality traits, notably their closeness with Natsuki. While Shizuru Viola is somewhat more popular than Shizuru Fujino, in my opinion, the latter is a better character. Shizuru Fujino Shizuru Fujino is the student council president of Fuuka Academy, as well as a third-year in its high school division. She's two years older than Natsuki Kuga, whom she met while in middle school, and is the only friend Natsuki has at the start of the series. Shizuru and Natsuki's backstory is elaborated upon in the sound dramas, post-episode bonuses and "Natsuki's Prelude," a prequel story. It's revealed that at the time Shizuru met Natsuki, Natsuki's mother was dead and her father had abandoned her, making her a bitter and cynical girl who was driven to get revenge a

My Hero Academia: Why Nejire Deserves Better

This entry contains My Hero Academia spoilers In a previous entry , I discussed how Horikoshi is squandering Uraraka's narrative potential by keeping her out of focus and holding back her development. Unfortunately, Uraraka is not the only My Hero Academia character to suffer from this problem, so I'll also look at Nejire Hado. Who Nejire Is Unlike Uraraka, who is ostensibly a main character, Nejire is more of a secondary character who is introduced near the start of the Internship arc, but she has a role to play. Nejire, along with Mirio Togata and Tamaki Amajiki is one of U.A.'s "Big Three," three of the school's best third-years, who'd risen to prominence despite being unimpressive. While Mirio and Tamaki are long-time best friends, Nejire is more of an acquaintance to them; Mirio and Tamaki call each other by their first names, but refer to Nejire by her surname, and she responds in kind. The three of them work as interns under pro heroes- Mirio works

Gaming Oddities: Mario is Missing

Mario has appeared in a lot of different types of games, from platformers to sports games to even educational games. Many of his stranger games were published in the early 90s, when Mario was getting popular, but Nintendo wasn't fully sure about how to use him outside of the main series. One 1992 game stood out by virtue of having Mario take a backseat to his brother Luigi- Mario is Missing. If you're familiar with Luigi, you'll notice that he hasn't had the best luck when it comes to starring roles in video games. Initially, he was only the second player character, although he was selectable in Super Mario Bros. 2- both The Lost Levels and the reskinned version of Doki Doki Panic. Eventually, as Mario games phased out the two-player mode, Luigi ended up appearing less and less, and often became the butt of jokes in some titles, before eventually getting a game series of his own. Of course, this game came out almost a decade before Luigi's Mansion, at a time when so

Top 10 Worst Changes 4Kids Made to One Piece

This entry will contain One Piece spoilers. 4Kids Entertainment is hardly the most popular company for many reasons, and is especially notorious for its treatment of anime. Not only are the voice actors rather poor, but the company frequently edits out anything that is overly violent, sexual or Japanese for their tastes. (The latter is not an exaggeration; rice balls get turned into jelly donuts for whatever reason). One Piece suffered at 4Kids' hands, and the rather infamously butchered dub still taints the series' reputation in the eyes of some people. This is my list of the top 10 worst changes, inspired by a video series that YouTuber Tsukento made years ago, but never competed. Before I begin, the list will consist of specific examples, not general trends, although each entry will often be a shining example of a certain trend. #10: Sanji's Lollipops This is fairly low on the list because I can understand why 4Kids doesn't want kids to see one of their favorite hero

Girls und Panzer Fanfic Bingo

Girls Und Panzer, an anime about tank combat as a high school girls' sport, is rather strange in that its fans tend to break may of the unspoken rules of fan fiction, such as when it comes to pairing original characters with canon characters, but the fandom still has a lot of fanfic tropes that fanfics commonly follow. I set up another bingo board for tropes in a given fanfic. A1:The fic includes air combat as well as tank combat. A2:The author namedrops World of Tanks, War Thunder or similar video games, or includes related memes. A3:MEXT decides that Oarai's success is not enough to keep it open, and either forces it to win more tournaments or shuts it down entirely. A4:The fic includes depictions of characters or schools that are obsolete as of das Finale, der Film, the Anzio OVA or even the last two episodes of the series. A5:The story features at least one team that is either coed or all boys. B1:At least one of the characters puts forth the idea that Kuromorimine/Black F
